Transfera: a Fabric warehouse in place of Informix

Transfera replaced a legacy Informix warehouse with a Microsoft Fabric platform on a medallion architecture: refresh down from 24 hours to under 20 minutes, tens of millions of rows, a fifth of an F8 capacity — one of the first Fabric implementations in the region.

Microsoft Fabric
The challenge

What the client came to us with.

Transfera, a freight forwarding and logistics company, relied on a data warehouse over legacy IBM Informix databases connected to its ERP. Reports ran a day late, data integration and transformation were manual and error-prone, and the architecture gave no foundation for advanced analytics. Daily and monthly exchange rates were keyed into the ERP by hand.

What we delivered

The solution.

Microsoft Fabric with a medallion architecture — one of the first Fabric implementations in the region. Incremental ingestion from the ERP into the Bronze layer, dimension and fact tables in the Silver layer (Delta Lake), business aggregations in the Gold layer; orchestration through Factory Pipelines, data in OneLake. Incremental loading and SCD dimensions, V-order optimisation and a weekly VACUUM to keep capacity usage down; a data-validation notebook after every ETL. Team: an architect and two data engineers, one a certified Fabric Analytics Engineer.

Results

What measurably changed.

< 20 min refresh, previously 24 h
tens of millions of rows
~20% of an F8 capacity

Data processing went from several days to under 20 minutes — twice-daily refreshes and on-demand insight instead of a one-day lag. Tens of millions of rows in the main table, with time travel over receivables and financing. The solution uses about a fifth of an F8 capacity, leaving room to grow.

“The modernization of our data platform has been a game-changer. The new system not only gives us twice-daily updates — compared to the previous 24-hour lag — but also delivers a complete analytical overview of our operations. This project has significantly improved our ability to react to market changes and optimize our business processes. We’re now confident in the scalability and reliability of our data platform for the future.” — Dejan Stojanović, e-Commerce Architect, Transfera
